Opposition MPs March in Parliament, Demand Amit Shah’s Statement on Alleged Police Excesses

New Delhi: Opposition parties intensified their protest inside the Parliament House complex on Wednesday, demanding that Union Home Minister Amit Shah make a statement in Parliament over allegations of excessive police action against students during recent demonstrations. The protest also highlighted issues related to the alleged misuse of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Leaders and MPs from the INDIA bloc gathered at the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Prerna Sthal before marching towards Makar Dwar while carrying placards and raising slogans against the Central Government. The demonstration was led by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with MPs from several opposition parties.

Addressing reporters, Kharge questioned the absence of the Home Minister from Parliament and urged him to respond to the concerns raised by the Opposition.

“He should come to the House and make a statement. Parliament deserves accountability on issues of national importance,” Kharge said, accusing the government of avoiding discussion on the matter.

The protesting MPs demanded that the Home Minister address both Houses regarding the alleged use of force by police and security personnel against students protesting over the paper leak issue. Opposition leaders claimed that students were subjected to lathi charges, tear gas and pellet firing during demonstrations and sought an official explanation from the government.

The protest also focused on allegations surrounding the handling of donations made at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Several MPs carried symbolic donation boxes to draw attention to what they described as irregularities in the management of public contributions. Some lawmakers placed cash into the boxes as part of the demonstration, alleging that donations had been misused.

Another key issue raised during the march was the demand for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. MPs from the Union Territory displayed placards calling for statehood, noting that the protest coincided with the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganisation of the former state into a Union Territory.

Slogans demanding accountability from the Home Minister echoed across the Parliament complex as Opposition members marched behind a large banner calling for an official response.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said those occupying constitutional positions must accept responsibility for actions taken under their administration. Referring to the alleged police action during student protests, she asserted that democratic institutions require transparency and accountability rather than silence on matters affecting citizens.

The demonstration witnessed participation from leaders across several Opposition parties, including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and others, reflecting a coordinated effort by the INDIA bloc to keep pressure on the government during the ongoing Parliament session.

The Opposition has indicated that it will continue raising these issues inside and outside Parliament, seeking detailed discussions and official responses on the alleged police action, the Ayodhya donation controversy and the demand for restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
