Opposition MPs Move Notices in Parliament Seeking Removal of CEC Kumar
Over 190 lawmakers from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha back motion citing alleged partisan conduct
New Delhi: Opposition members of Parliament have submitted notices in both Houses seeking a motion for the removal of Gyanesh Kumar, sources said on Friday.
According to sources, the move has the support of 130 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 63 members of the Rajya Sabha.
The signatories reportedly include lawmakers from several parties within the opposition’s INDIA bloc. Members of the Aam Aadmi Party have also backed the initiative despite not being formally part of the alliance at present. A few independent MPs have also joined the effort, while others are said to be considering supporting the proposal.
Sources said the notice contains seven allegations against the Chief Election Commissioner, including claims of partisan behaviour in office, obstruction in probing electoral irregularities, and actions that allegedly led to large-scale disenfranchisement.
Opposition parties have accused the poll body chief of favouring the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on multiple occasions, particularly in relation to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
If taken up, this would mark the first instance of a formal notice being submitted in Parliament seeking the removal of a Chief Election Commissioner.
