Oscars 2026: Dharmendra Omitted From ‘In Memoriam’ Segment, Fans Disappointed

Veteran Hindi cinema icon left out of tribute at 98th Academy Awards despite decades long film career.

Mumbai, Mar 16 : The absence of legendary Bollywood actor Dharmendra from the ‘In Memoriam’ segment at the 98th Academy Awards has sparked disappointment among fans and film enthusiasts on social media.

The tribute segment traditionally honours prominent film personalities who passed away during the year. While several international cinema figures were remembered during the ceremony, the veteran Indian star’s name was not included, prompting criticism from admirers who felt his contribution to cinema deserved recognition on the global stage.

Dharmendra, who died in November last year, had a career spanning more than six decades and was widely regarded as one of the most influential actors in Hindi cinema. Known for his powerful screen presence and emotional range, he built a reputation not only as an action hero but also as a versatile performer across multiple genres.

Among his most acclaimed performances was the 1969 film Satyakam, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, which explored complex social issues and showcased the actor’s dramatic depth. He also demonstrated his comic timing in the classic Chupke Chupke, another collaboration with Mukherjee.

Dharmendra’s career also featured several blockbuster titles that helped define mainstream Hindi cinema, including Sholay, Dharam Veer, Hukumat and Tahalka. His performances across action, drama and comedy earned him enduring popularity and the nickname “He-Man” of Bollywood.

During the Oscars tribute, the academy remembered several late international stars, including Robert Redford, Diane Keaton, Catherine O’Hara, Udo Kier, Rob Reiner, Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman and Val Kilmer.

Following the ceremony, many fans expressed their disappointment online, stating that Dharmendra’s legacy and influence in world cinema merited acknowledgement in the memorial tribute.
