Congress Leaders Condemn Attack on Tara Chand; Calls for Enhanced Security and Arrest of Culprits
Jammu, October 6, 2024 — The recent attack on former Deputy Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Shri Tara Chand has sparked widespread outrage and concern across Jammu and Kashmir. Shri Tara Chand, who is also the Indian National Congress (INC) candidate from Chhamb and the Working President of the Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), was attacked at his residence in Chak Malal, near Khour, on October 1st. The incident has heightened fears about the deteriorating security situation in the region, with leaders and citizens alike questioning the state’s law and order management.
In response to the incident, the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee’s (JKPCC) OBC Department, led by Chairman Madan Lal Chalotra, immediately convened an online meeting. The virtual assembly brought together district representatives from across J&K to discuss the implications of the attack and deliberate on the necessary actions moving forward.
The meeting was marked by a unified condemnation of the attack, with participants expressing deep concern over the repeated targeting of Shri Tara Chand. They pointed to the lack of timely action by the police, labeling it a grave oversight, especially in light of prior incidents involving threats to the former Deputy Chief Minister. Many criticized the apparent failure of authorities to provide adequate security to such a high-profile leader, warning that this negligence sets a dangerous precedent for the safety of other political figures and the general public.
Calls for stronger measures have been growing, with party members and citizens alike demanding an immediate upgrade to Shri Tara Chand’s security detail.
