20-07-2023 : The Government of India has taken swift action in response to the widely circulated video from Manipur, which depicts a shocking and horrifying incident of two women being paraded naked and molested by a group of men. Due to the inflammatory nature of the video and the ongoing investigation into the matter, the government has directed Twitter and other social media platforms to remove the video from their platforms.
The incident, which took place on May 4, has sparked outrage across the nation and drawn condemnation from various quarters. The video captures a deplorable act of sexual assault and violence against women, and its dissemination on social media has only amplified the public’s anger and concern.
Union Women and Child Development Minister, Smriti Irani, expressed her deep distress over the incident and called it “condemnable and downright inhuman.” She has already spoken to Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh regarding the matter. CM Biren Singh assured her that a thorough investigation is underway, and every effort will be made to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The incident has further intensified tensions in the hills of Manipur, and it comes amid a planned protest march announced by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) to highlight their plight. The local police have registered a case of abduction, gang rape, and murder against unknown armed miscreants at the Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district.
The incident itself is a stark reminder of the urgent need to address violence against women, and strengthen measures for their protection. It has also brought to the forefront the importance of creating a safe and secure environment for women, where they can freely exercise their rights without fear of violence or harassment.
As the investigation continues, it is crucial for the authorities to conduct a fair and thorough inquiry, ensuring that the perpetrators are swiftly identified and brought to justice. Accountability for such heinous acts is essential to deter future occurrences and send a strong message that such crimes will not be tolerated.
As the nation awaits the outcome of the investigation and justice for the victims, it is essential for all stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, and individuals, to work together to create a safer and more inclusive society where the rights and dignity of all individuals, especially women, are respected and protected.
