Pakistan on High Alert as Govt Seals Roads, Bans Gatherings Ahead of PTI Mega Protest
Section 144 imposed for 72 hours, roads sealed and gatherings banned as tensions rise
Pakistan, Dec 02 : Authorities in Rawalpindi have placed the city on high alert and invoked Section 144 for three days amid growing concerns over the health of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. The move comes as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters prepare for large scale demonstrations near Adiala Jail and outside the Islamabad High Court.
Deputy Commissioner Dr Hassan Waqar Cheema signed the emergency order on Friday, citing intelligence warnings about potential attempts to incite unrest. Officials warned that large gatherings could quickly escalate amid political tension surrounding Khan’s condition.
City Braces as PTI Mobilises
Roads leading to Adiala Jail were sealed, with police checkpoints set up at multiple entry points. PTI leaders, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, have accused the government of blocking all requests to meet Khan. Afridi warned that nationwide protests would be launched if authorities continue withholding information.
Rumours on social media about harm coming to Khan in custody have escalated tensions, with some unverified claims suggesting a potential assassination plot, though no official confirmation has been issued. Khan’s sisters have staged a sit-in near the prison for days, citing denial of communication for nearly a month, while his sons expressed concern over the lack of verifiable information, describing it as psychological torture.
Section 144 Restrictions in Rawalpindi
Under the order, the following activities are prohibited until December 3:
Gatherings of five or more people, including rallies, sit-ins, and public meetings.
Carrying weapons or hazardous items such as batons, explosives, or petrol bombs.
Display of firearms, except by law enforcement.
Removal or damage of police barriers or roadblocks.
Pillion riding on motorcycles.
Use of loudspeakers for any purpose.
Activities likely to incite unrest, including provocative speeches near key installations.
With tensions running high, Rawalpindi remains on edge as authorities prepare to manage potential confrontations in the coming days.
