Parliament Prepares for Heated SIR Debate Government Aims to Counter ‘False Narratives’
Lok Sabha to discuss Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls amid Opposition protests over disenfranchisement claims
New Delhi, Dec 09 : The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across states and union territories takes centre stage in Parliament on Tuesday, with the Lok Sabha scheduled to begin debate at 12 noon. The discussion will also cover broader electoral reforms following Opposition demands for a debate on the matter.
The first week of the Winter Session was dominated by protests from Opposition leaders, who alleged that the SIR, initially conducted in Bihar and later announced for 12 states and UTs, is causing large scale disenfranchisement of marginalised communities. Congress leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, staged demonstrations inside and outside Parliament, holding placards reading, “Stop SIR – Stop Vote Chori.”
Ahead of the debate, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told reporters, “Today, the discussion on election reforms will begin in the Lok Sabha. Members of the Opposition will also speak, and the government will have an opportunity to clarify the false narratives that have been created. The people place their trust in democracy and participate in the electoral process, so it is important that no one is misled by false narratives. This debate will allow us to present our position clearly.”
