Pilgrimage to Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Resumes After Three-Week Suspension
Yatra Restarts With Strict Safety Measures Following Deadly Landslide in Reasi
KATRA, Sep 17: Amid chants of “Jai Mata Di”, the pilgrimage to the holy Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta hills resumed on Wednesday after being suspended for 22 days due to a devastating landslide in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district that claimed 34 lives and injured 20.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) announced the reopening of the yatra from early morning, subject to favorable weather conditions. The decision brought relief and joy to hundreds of devotees who had been waiting at Katra—the base camp for the shrine.
Officials said the pilgrimage began at 6 a.m. from both the traditional and alternate routes leading to the hilltop shrine, following essential repair and maintenance works. Pilgrims were seen gathering at Banganga Darshani Gate, expressing gratitude for the resumption of the yatra.
The shrine board has made Radio Frequency Identity Card (RFID)-based tracking mandatory for all devotees to ensure transparency and safety. Pilgrims have been advised to carry valid identification, follow designated pathways, and cooperate with on-ground staff.
“The resumption of the yatra is a reaffirmation of faith and resilience. We remain committed to upholding the sanctity and safety of this revered pilgrimage,” an official of the SMVDSB said.
Several pilgrims, including groups from Maharashtra and Pune, described the reopening as a blessing and thanked the administration for ensuring safe arrangements.
With Navratri beginning on September 22, authorities expect a significant rise in the number of devotees visiting the shrine in the coming days.
The yatra had been suspended on August 26, just hours before a major landslide struck the route, leading to tragic loss of lives.
