Thimphu, Nov 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bhutan on Tuesday for a two-day visit aimed at deepening India–Bhutan relations and participating in the 70th birthday celebrations of Bhutan’s Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

Modi was received at Paro Airport by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, who welcomed him warmly, saying on X, “I join the entire nation in welcoming my elder brother Prime Minister @narendramodi to Bhutan.”

During his visit, Modi will hold bilateral talks with Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck and Prime Minister Tobgay. The leaders are set to jointly inaugurate the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II hydroelectric project, a key symbol of India–Bhutan cooperation in the energy sector.

The Prime Minister will also meet the Fourth King and take part in celebrations marking his 70th birthday. Before departing for Thimphu, Modi said, “I am confident that my visit will further deepen our bonds of friendship and strengthen our efforts towards shared progress and prosperity.”

Highlighting the close ties between the two nations, Modi added that the India–Bhutan partnership “is a key pillar of our Neighbourhood First Policy and a model of exemplary friendly relations between neighbouring countries.”

The visit also coincides with the exposition of the sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha, sent from India to Bhutan, further underscoring the shared cultural and spiritual heritage between the two nations.
