PM Modi Observes Makar Sankranti by Feeding Cows; Yogi Adityanath Offers Khichdi at Gorakhnath Temple
New Delhi, Jan 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Makar Sankranti by feeding cows at the lawn of his residence in New Delhi, embracing the festival’s spirit of gratitude and respect for nature and livestock.
Makar Sankranti, one of India’s most significant festivals, marks the transition of the sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn, signalling the end of the winter solstice and the start of longer days. The festival is celebrated across India under different names Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, and Maghi in parts of North India with customs that honour the sun, harvest, farmers, and livestock.
Yesterday, PM Modi also participated in Pongal celebrations at the residence of Union Minister of State L. Murugan, continuing the tradition of offering thanks for nature’s bounty. Makar Sankranti festivities typically involve preparing khichdi, distributing sesame jaggery sweets, offering coconut laddoos, and flying colourful kites, especially in northern and western states.
In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath marked the occasion by offering the sacred khichdi to Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath at the Gorakhnath Temple during Brahma Muhurta, along with prayers at the temple. Extending greetings to citizens, saints, and devotees, CM Adityanath said, “The festival holds a special place in India’s age old traditions,” adding that Makar Sankranti ushers in a period of auspicious ceremonies in the Sanatan Dharma tradition.
Through these celebrations, leaders highlighted the cultural importance of the festival and the values of gratitude, abundance, and unity it represents.
