Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal mourns the loss of his son, who passed away at 49; leaders across India offer condolences
New Delhi, Jan 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed his shock and grief over the untimely passing of Agnivesh Agarwal, son of Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal, describing the loss as “deeply shocking and saddening.”
Anil Agarwal announced the demise of his 49 year old son on social media platform X, saying, “Today is the darkest day of my life. My beloved son, Agnivesh, left us far too soon. He was healthy, full of life and dreams. Following a skiing accident in the US, he was recovering at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. We believed the worst was behind us, but fate had other plans, and a sudden cardiac arrest snatched our son away from us.”
Agnivesh Agarwal studied at Mayo College, Ajmer, and went on to establish Fujairah Gold, later becoming Chairman of Hindustan Zinc. He was known for his entrepreneurial acumen and commitment to social causes.
PM Modi responded to Anil Agarwal’s post, writing:
“The untimely passing of Shri Agnivesh Agarwal is deeply shocking and saddening. The depth of your grief is evident in this touching tribute. Praying that you and your family find continued strength and courage. Om Shanti.”
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also expressed condolences, saying it was heartbreaking to learn about the “irreparable loss” and praying for Agnivesh’s soul to attain peace.
In his message, Anil Agarwal reaffirmed the philanthropic dreams he shared with his son, including ensuring that no child sleeps hungry, no child is denied education, women achieve empowerment, and every young Indian has meaningful work. He vowed to continue their mission and live an even simpler life in memory of Agnivesh.
