Vaishali shines in world chess, Anandkumar creates history in speed skating as PM Modi lauds their achievements

New Delhi, Sep 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated two of India’s rising sports icons  Chess Grandmaster Vaishali Rameshbabu and speed skater Anandkumar Velkumar  for their landmark achievements on the global stage.

Vaishali, India’s third female Grandmaster, recently clinched her second consecutive victory at the FIDE Women’s Grand Swiss tournament, securing a berth in the Women’s Candidates Tournament. Applauding her feat, PM Modi wrote on X, “Outstanding accomplishment. Congrats to Vaishali Rameshbabu. Her passion and dedication are exemplary. Best wishes for her future endeavors.”

In another historic achievement, Anandkumar Velkumar became India’s first-ever World Champion in speed skating after winning gold in the Senior Men’s 1000m Sprint at the Speed Skating World Championships 2025. Commending his success, PM Modi said, “Proud of Anandkumar Velkuma. His grit, speed and spirit have made him India’s first World Champion in skating. His accomplishment will inspire countless youngsters.”

These milestones underline India’s growing footprint in international sports, with Vaishali and Anandkumar’s success stories serving as powerful inspirations for the next generation of athletes.
