PM Modi Inaugurates Z-Morh Tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, Ensuring Year-Round Connectivity

Srinagar, Jan 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the strategically significant Z-Morh tunnel in Sonamarg, Jammu and Kashmir, marking a major milestone in the region’s infrastructure development. The tunnel, worth ₹2,700 crore, is designed to provide year-round accessibility to the picturesque tourist resort of Sonamarg, which was previously cut off during harsh winters.

Following the inauguration, PM Modi personally inspected the 6.5-kilometer-long tunnel, interacting with project officials and commending the construction workers for their dedication in completing the project despite the region’s challenging terrain and weather conditions.

The event saw the presence of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who lauded the project as a game-changer for the region.

Arriving in Srinagar at 10:45 AM, PM Modi proceeded to Sonamarg for the inauguration and is scheduled to address a public meeting later in the day. This marks his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir following the state assembly elections held last year.

The Z-Morh tunnel, located at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, is a two-lane bi-directional road tunnel with a parallel 7.5-meter-wide emergency escape passage. It enhances all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg on the way to Leh, providing a safer and more reliable route by bypassing areas prone to landslides and avalanches.

The tunnel is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting tourism and trade in the region while significantly improving accessibility for locals and travelers. Its strategic importance extends to national security by ensuring seamless connectivity to the critical border areas of Ladakh.
