AI Must Be Democratised, Says PM Modi at India AI Impact Summit

NEW DELHI, Feb 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday asserted that artificial intelligence should serve as an instrument of inclusion and empowerment, particularly for nations of the Global South, stressing that technology must be accessible and beneficial to all.

Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit, Modi described artificial intelligence as a defining transformation in human history and underlined India’s growing leadership in the sector. He said the country, home to one-sixth of humanity and the world’s largest young population, is uniquely positioned to shape the future of AI with its vast pool of technology talent.

“Artificial intelligence represents a historic turning point. India is not merely participating in this revolution  it is helping drive and define it,” the Prime Minister said while addressing global leaders and technology executives gathered at the summit.

Highlighting India’s rapid adoption of emerging technologies, Modi noted that the younger generation has embraced AI with remarkable enthusiasm. He added that the strong response to the summit exhibition reflects widespread optimism about innovation and its potential impact.

Drawing parallels with pivotal moments that altered the course of civilisation, the Prime Minister said AI is one such milestone that will influence the trajectory of global development for decades to come.

The summit at Bharat Mandapam witnessed participation from several world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Seychelles Vice President Sebastien Pillay, Estonian President Alar Karis, and Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo.
