PM Modi Pays Tribute to K Kamaraj, Remembering the Freedom Fighter and Visionary Nation Builder

Prime Minister Narendra Modi pays tribute to the iconic freedom fighter and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, recalling his contributions to education, social welfare and inclusive development.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid tribute to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader K. Kamaraj on his birth anniversary, remembering him as one of the prominent figures of India’s freedom movement and a leader who devoted his entire life to public service.

In a message shared on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi praised Kamaraj’s dedication towards building a stronger India and highlighted his efforts in expanding education opportunities and promoting the welfare of disadvantaged sections of society.

“Remembering Thiru K. Kamaraj Ji on his birth anniversary. A stalwart of India’s freedom movement and an exceptional public figure, he dedicated his life to nation-building,” the Prime Minister said in his post.

Modi further stated that Kamaraj’s commitment to creating an inclusive and fair society continues to inspire future generations. He noted that the former leader’s focus on education, development and social welfare remains relevant even today.

Kamaraj’s Contributions to Education and Social Development

K. Kamaraj remains widely remembered for his efforts to strengthen the education system in Tamil Nadu and make schooling accessible to children from all backgrounds. During his tenure as Chief Minister of Madras State, he introduced several initiatives aimed at improving school infrastructure and increasing student enrollment.

His leadership was marked by a strong focus on rural development and welfare-oriented policies. His approach to governance emphasized practical solutions, public welfare and equal opportunities for citizens.

Tamil Nadu BJP leaders also paid homage to Kamaraj, acknowledging his contribution to politics, social reform and national development.

From Humble Beginnings to a National Leader

Born on July 15, 1903, in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, Kumaraswami Kamaraj came from a modest background. His formal education ended after only six years, and he began working at a young age to support his family.

A major turning point in his life came when he learned about the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919. The incident deeply influenced him and motivated him to join India’s freedom struggle.

Kamaraj became actively involved in the independence movement and worked closely with several national leaders. His commitment to the cause of freedom established him as a respected figure within the Indian National Congress.

Political Journey and Role in Nation Building

Kamaraj entered electoral politics in 1937 when he was elected to the Madras Legislative Assembly without opposition. He continued his political journey and was elected again in 1946.

He also became a member of the Constituent Assembly of India in 1946 and later entered Parliament in 1952. His political career reflected his dedication to democratic values and public service.

In 1954, Kamaraj became the Chief Minister of Madras State, where he focused on improving education, expanding infrastructure and implementing welfare programmes.

One of his most significant contributions to Indian politics came in 1963 when he proposed that senior Congress leaders should step away from government positions and dedicate themselves to strengthening the party organisation. This idea later became known as the ‘Kamaraj Plan’ and played an important role in shaping the political structure of the Congress party.

Bharat Ratna Recognition for Kamaraj’s Service

Kamaraj’s contributions to Indian politics and society were recognised even after his death. In 1976, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.

His legacy continues to be remembered for his simplicity, administrative abilities and commitment to social equality. Leaders across political parties continue to highlight his role as a statesman who placed public welfare above personal ambition.

Prime Minister Modi’s tribute once again brought attention to Kamaraj’s remarkable journey — from a humble background to becoming one of India’s most respected political leaders and nation builders.
