Prime Minister says the spiritual leader’s inspiring message continues to resonate worldwide
NEW DELHI, Sep 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to Swami Vivekananda, recalling his historic speech at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago on September 11, 1893, and said its message continues to inspire people across the globe.
In a post on X, Modi highlighted the significance of the address delivered by the renowned spiritual leader more than a century ago.
“11th September 1893, Chicago. Swami Vivekananda’s captivating address offered a glimpse of the civilisational ethos of India. His inspiring words still reverberate across the world,” the Prime Minister said.
Vivekananda’s appearance at the Parliament of Religions is widely regarded as a landmark moment in the global presentation of Indian spiritual thought. His address introduced Western audiences to the broader philosophical traditions of Hinduism while emphasising values of tolerance, harmony and universal acceptance.
The spiritual leader also placed strong emphasis on social service and humanitarian work, presenting them as essential expressions of spiritual life.
More than a century after the Chicago gathering, his message continues to hold relevance, particularly in discussions surrounding interfaith understanding, compassion and peaceful coexistence.
The Prime Minister’s remarks came on the anniversary of the landmark address, which remains one of the most remembered episodes in Vivekananda’s life and India’s modern spiritual history.
