Nation Mourns Loss of Assam’s Musical Icon, Prime Minister Expresses Condolences

India : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the sudden passing of acclaimed singer Zubeen Garg, Assam’s cultural icon, who died in Singapore on Friday at the age of 52.

In a message on X, PM Modi wrote, “Shocked by the sudden demise of popular singer Zubeen Garg. He will be remembered for his rich contribution to music. His renditions were very popular among people across all walks of life. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Garg’s death has left fans across Assam and the Northeast in deep mourning. Fondly known as the “heartthrob of Assam,” Zubeen Garg’s voice was considered a symbol of regional identity and pride.

Zubeen rose to fame with his debut album Anamika in 1992, which made him a household name. He later gained national recognition with the song Ya Ali from the Bollywood film Gangster in 2006. Over his illustrious career, he recorded more than 38,000 songs in nearly 40 languages, including Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and Nepali, touching hearts across India and beyond.

His concerts, whether in Guwahati or Dibrugarh, were celebrated as cultural festivals where thousands gathered to sing along, reflecting the deep connection he had with his audience.

Though Zubeen Garg’s life was cut short, his music and legacy will continue to inspire generations and preserve the spirit of modern Assamese music.
