PM Modi Says Commissioning of Samudra Pratap Strengthens India’s Self-Reliance

Home built pollution control ship to enhance maritime security, sustainability, and Coast Guard capabilities

New Delhi, Jan 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the commissioning of the home built pollution control ship Samudra Pratap has reinforced India’s vision of self-reliance and demonstrated a commitment to sustainability.

The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samudra Pratap, India’s first indigenously built pollution control vessel and the largest ship in the Coast Guard fleet, was commissioned on Monday by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

“The commissioning of ICGS Samudra Pratap is noteworthy for numerous reasons, including strengthening our self-reliance, boosting security, and reflecting a commitment to sustainability,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.

The vessel will play a critical role in marine pollution control, maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, and safeguarding India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Equipped with side sweeping arms, floating booms, high-capacity skimmers, portable barges, and a pollution control laboratory, the ship is designed for rapid and efficient pollution response at sea.

In addition, Samudra Pratap features an external fire fighting system and integrates advanced technologies, including dynamic positioning, integrated bridge and platform management systems, and automated power management, enhancing automation and mission efficiency for the Coast Guard.

The commissioning underscores India’s focus on indigenous defence production, environmental protection, and maritime security, aligning with the government’s broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
