Prime Minister asks ministers to prioritise governance, speedy delivery and welfare outreach while setting 2047 target for a fully developed India
NEW DELHI, May 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a crucial meeting of the Council of Ministers and emphasised the need for faster reforms, efficient governance and improved public services to achieve the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.
The high-level meeting, held on Thursday evening, lasted for more than four hours and was attended by cabinet ministers, ministers of state (independent charge) and ministers of state. It was the first Council of Ministers meeting of the year.
In a message shared on X, Modi described the interaction as productive and said discussions focused on improving “Ease of Living” and “Ease of Doing Business” through better policy implementation and administrative reforms.
The prime minister underlined that the government’s priority should remain people-centric governance and ensuring greater convenience in citizens’ daily lives. According to sources, Modi told ministers that unnecessary interference in public life should be avoided and every effort must be made to simplify governance systems.
During the meeting, the prime minister reportedly asked ministers to work with the long-term objective of transforming India into a fully developed nation by 2047. He stressed that ministries should focus on future achievements instead of dwelling on past accomplishments since the government assumed office in 2014.
Modi also directed ministers to ensure there is no delay in official work and called for speedy execution of welfare schemes so that benefits reach people without obstacles. He advised the ministers to remain committed to governance, delivery and accountability.
The discussions also included presentations from senior officials and policymakers on government initiatives and international engagements.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar briefed the council on Modi’s recent visits to the UAE, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, highlighting India’s growing diplomatic outreach and strategic partnerships.
Nine secretaries from different ministries and departments presented reports on key policy initiatives, reforms and performance achievements. Cabinet Secretary T. V. Somanathan outlined major governance reforms and citizen focused measures undertaken by the government, while Rajiv Gauba also addressed the gathering on development priorities.
The meeting took place shortly after the BJP registered strong electoral victories in the West Bengal and Assam assembly elections and retained power in Puducherry, strengthening the ruling alliance’s political position ahead of future national goals.
