PM Modi Slams Congress, Says ‘British Failed to Divide India, Congress Succeeded’, While Honouring Sardar Patel’s Legacy of Unity
Prime Minister says “British failed to divide India, but Congress accomplished it” highlights Patel’s role in uniting 550 princely states and BJP’s commitment to his vision of a strong, integrated nation.
New Delhi, Oct 31 : On the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid rich tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, hailing him as the architect of national integration and accusing the Congress of betraying his vision of a united India.
Speaking at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, PM Modi lauded Patel’s historic achievement in integrating 550 princely states into the Indian Union, calling it a task “many thought impossible.” He said Patel’s leadership embodied the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”, a vision his government continues to uphold.
“Today, crores of people across India took the oath of unity. Every thought or action that weakens the nation must be shunned by every citizen. This is the need of the hour,” the Prime Minister said.
PM Modi criticised post-independence Congress governments for failing to protect India’s sovereignty, especially in Kashmir, the Northeast, and Naxal-affected regions. He said weak and indecisive policies after Patel’s death led to decades of unrest and bloodshed.
“Sardar Patel wanted the entire Jammu and Kashmir to be part of India, but Nehru’s wrong decisions divided it. As a result, India suffered for decades,” he said, adding that the BJP government “fulfilled Patel’s dream” by abrogating Article 370 and integrating Kashmir into the national mainstream.
The Prime Minister also referred to Operation Sindoor, saying that the operation demonstrated India’s new resolve against terrorism.
“The whole world saw that if anyone dares to challenge India, Bharat ghar mein ghus kar maarta hai,” Modi declared.
Taking a sharp dig at the Congress, PM Modi said the party not only inherited power from the British but also “their slave mentality.”
He linked the Congress’s actions to India’s partition, claiming the party had “distorted” Vande Mataram for political appeasement.
“The British failed to divide India, but Congress accomplished it. The day Congress decided to break and alter Vande Mataram, it laid the foundation for the country’s partition,” he said.
The Prime Minister concluded by saying that Sardar Patel’s vision of unity and strength continues to guide India’s journey, and his government remains committed to protecting that legacy.
