Mahakumbh Nagar, Feb 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday participated in the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, taking a holy dip at the revered Triveni Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. The event, steeped in spiritual significance, drew an enormous crowd as the Prime Minister performed traditional Hindu rituals.
Dressed in a deep orange full-sleeve jersey and blue lowers, Modi held rudraksh beads in his hands during the bathing ritual, as Vedic mantras resonated across the riverbanks. Adorned with a rudraksh necklace, he offered prayers to the Sun and River Ganga, underscoring the deep-rooted cultural and religious ethos of the Maha Kumbh.
The Prime Minister’s visit began with a boat ride from Arail Ghat to the Triveni Sangam, where he was accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Along the route, Modi acknowledged the thousands of devotees lining the riverbanks, waving to them as they chanted prayers and showered flower petals in his honor.
Following the ritualistic dip, Modi performed an elaborate ‘aarti’ ceremony onboard a specially constructed floating platform on the river. Draped in a black jacket and a traditional Himachali cap, he offered milk and flowers to the sacred rivers, symbolizing reverence and devotion. A priest guided the intricate religious proceedings, while Chief Minister Adityanath stood in observance nearby.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, commenced on January 13 and will continue until February 26. Held once every 12 years, the festival attracts millions of Hindu devotees seeking spiritual cleansing through the sacred dip. According to official estimates, over 38 crore pilgrims have already visited the grand event, reinforcing its status as an unparalleled spiritual congregation.
Despite the high-profile visit, authorities ensured that the spiritual experience for devotees remained uninterrupted. While security was heightened, other ghats remained accessible for pilgrims to take their ritual dips alongside the PM’s visit.
Modi’s participation in the Maha Kumbh coincided with the Delhi Assembly elections and the Milkipur bypoll in Uttar Pradesh, adding political significance to the event. However, his presence was largely seen as a symbolic reaffirmation of India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
As the Maha Kumbh continues to draw millions from across India and the world, the Prime Minister’s holy dip at the Triveni Sangam has further elevated the festival’s religious and national prominence.
