PM Modi to Inaugurate Purnea Airport and Other Key Projects on September 15

Bihar to get its fourth commercial airport, new rail links, power project, National Makhana Board, and key infrastructure upgrades.

Purnea, Sep 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bihar’s Purnea district on September 15 to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of development projects worth nearly Rs 36,000 crore, with the highlight being the much-awaited Purnea Airport—Bihar’s fourth operational commercial airport after Patna, Gaya, and Darbhanga.

The PM will dedicate the Interim Terminal Building at Purnea Airport’s new Civil Enclave, which will boost passenger handling capacity in northeastern Bihar.

In line with the Centre’s focus on connectivity, Modi will inaugurate and launch major rail projects, including the foundation stone of the Bikramshila-Katareah rail line (Rs 2,170 crore), the inauguration of the Araria–Galgalia (Thakurganj) rail line (Rs 4,410 crore), and the flagging off of new train services such as the Jogbani–Danapur Vande Bharat Express and the Amrit Bharat Express between Saharsa–Chheharta (Amritsar) and Jogbani–Erode. These services will connect Seemanchal and Bhagalpur with key states like Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

Another major highlight is the launch of the National Makhana Board, aimed at modernising production, improving branding, and boosting exports of Bihar’s famed makhana, which contributes nearly 90% of India’s total output. Districts including Madhubani, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Purnea, Supaul, Kishanganj, and Araria are expected to benefit.

The PM will also lay the foundation stone of a 3×800 MW thermal power plant at Pirpainti in Bhagalpur, a Rs 25,000-crore project based on ultra-supercritical, low-emission technology—the largest private-sector investment in Bihar.

Additionally, Modi will launch Phase 1 of the Kosi-Mechi Intra-State River Link Project (Rs 2,680 crore) to boost irrigation, flood control, and agricultural resilience. He will also inaugurate a Sex-Sorted Semen Facility in Purnea, the first of its kind in eastern and northeastern India under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, expected to produce 5 lakh doses annually.

Apart from infrastructure, the PM will participate in Griha Pravesh ceremonies for 41,000 rural and urban beneficiaries under PMAY, and distribute Community Investment Funds worth Rs 500 crore to self-help groups under DAY-NRLM, strengthening women-led rural livelihoods.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda are also scheduled to visit Bihar next week, making this a politically and economically significant development phase for the state.
