PM Lands at Northeast’s First Emergency Landing Facility in Assam
Guwahati, Feb 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday scripted a significant milestone by landing at the Northeast Emergency Landing Facility in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, marking the operational launch of the region’s first such infrastructure.
Arriving aboard a C-130J aircraft, the Prime Minister took off from the Chabua airfield and touched down on the newly developed 4.2-km reinforced stretch along National Highway-37 at Moran. The Rs 100-crore project is designed to function as a strategic runway capable of handling Indian Air Force fighter jets and transport aircraft.
Officials said the facility will enhance defence preparedness, improve logistics capabilities, and strengthen disaster response mechanisms in the region. It is structured for dual use, catering to both civil and military aviation requirements, and can serve as an alternative landing strip to Dibrugarh airport during emergencies.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Air Chief Marshal A P Singh were present at the event, underscoring the strategic importance of the development for the Northeast.
