PoJK DPs Rally for Justice: Demand Relief, Assembly Seats Ahead of PM’s Kashmir Visit

Jammu, 20-06-2024 : Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to Kashmir, Displaced Persons from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) staged a protest today, highlighting their demands for pending relief amounts totaling Rs 24.50 lakhs, reservations for DP wards in government jobs, and allocation of 24 Assembly seats for PoJK DPs.

Under the banner of PoJK DPs’ Front 1947, 1965, and 1971 (Non-Camp), led by President Capt (Retd) Yudhvir Singh Chib, a significant number of displaced persons gathered at Maharaja Hari Singh Park in Jammu to voice their grievances through a protest demonstration. They emphasized their request for compensation of Rs 30 lakhs per family, as recommended by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC). While welcoming PM Modi to Kashmir, they expressed hope that their longstanding issues would be addressed and urged local MPs Jugal Kishore Sharma and Dr. Jitendra Singh to advocate their cause during the Prime Minister’s visit.

Chib acknowledged the Modi government’s provision of Rs 5.50 lakhs per family but stressed that this amount constituted only the first installment of the total package recommended by the JPC. He emphasized the urgency of releasing the remaining Rs 24.50 lakhs per family.

The DPs pointed out that thousands of kanals of government land had been recovered from encroachers in Jammu and Kashmir, advocating that 10 marla plots be allocated to PoJK DPs and other refugees. They also demanded land allotment for non-camp refugees.

Capt Yudhvir Singh further demanded the allocation of 24 Assembly seats originally designated for the PoJK area to PoJK DPs. Alternatively, he proposed allocating at least 12 seats to them. He raised concerns about refugees from Chhamb, settled in Pargwal area, who had developed lands along the Chenab riverbank through hard work, only to have their lands taken back under the Roshni Act. He urged the government to reconsider and restore these lands to the rightful owners. Additionally, he called for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to be conferred upon DPs from PoJK.

Key figures present during the protest included JP Sharma, KS Chib, Kulbir Singh, Sakandya Devi (In-Charge, Mahila Wing), Sudesh Rani, and others.
