Political Interference in Institutions Is Unacceptable: CM Omar Abdullah
J&K Chief Minister flags concerns over meddling in departments, calls for independent functioning; stresses revival of tourism and public trust
Srinagar, Dec 15: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday said political interference in institutions is unacceptable and must be addressed with seriousness, calling reports of meddling in corporations and government departments “unfortunate and worrisome.”
Speaking to reporters at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar, Omar said institutions should function independently and free from outside pressure or political motivation.
“Political interference should not happen. Such matters must be viewed seriously. Earlier, these institutions were accountable to an elected government, but now decisions are being taken without that system in place,” the Chief Minister said.
He underlined that bodies such as the Power Development Corporation and other departments must be allowed to operate autonomously to ensure efficiency, transparency and public confidence in governance.
On tourism, Omar acknowledged that recent tensions had led to some cancellations but expressed optimism about a revival ahead of Christmas and New Year. He said the upcoming annual convention of the Adventure Tour Operators Association of India in Srinagar was a positive signal.
“We must focus on strengthening tourism promotion and infrastructure. At the same time, restoring people’s confidence in governance and administration is equally important,” he added.
