Prakash Raj Claims Palestinian Films Barred From BIFFes, Calls on Karnataka Govt to Act
Actor calls for state support for artistic freedom as controversy overshadows Bengaluru International Film Festival
Bengaluru, Jan 30 – Actor and BIFFes brand ambassador Prakash Raj sparked controversy at the 17th Bengaluru International Film Festival by alleging that Palestinian films were blocked from screening due to political interference. Taking the stage on the festival’s opening day, Raj recited lines from a Palestinian poem, highlighting the human cost of conflict and the silencing of marginalized voices.
Addressing the audience, he claimed that the central government had prevented the films from being shown, calling such interference “unacceptable” and contrary to the spirit of cinema. “Films should tell human stories, not undergo filtering for political comfort,” he said, urging Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the Karnataka government to take a stand in favor of artistic freedom.
Raj cited Kerala as an example, where authorities allowed Palestinian films to be screened despite controversy, and urged Karnataka to show similar courage.
Despite the political storm, BIFFes 2025 continues as one of its most diverse editions, showcasing over 300 films from around the world, including 60 directed by women and more than 100 award-winning titles. The festival runs until February 6 at multiple venues across Bengaluru, including Cinepolis at Lulu Mall, Suchitra Film Society, and the Kannada Film Artistes’ Association.
