Pratika Rawal: “I Aim to Give My Best for the Team”

Maiden World Cup century, record breaking partnership, and a team-first mindset define Pratika Rawal’s stellar innings against New Zealand.

India, Oct 24 : After her maiden World Cup century against New Zealand at DY Patil Stadium on Thursday, India opener Pratika Rawal remained humble, emphasizing her focus on the team rather than individual milestones.

Pratika’s 122-run innings, combined with Smriti Mandhana’s contribution, formed a 212-run opening stand the highest for India Women in World Cup history, surpassing the previous 184-run record between Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur against West Indies in 2022.

In achieving her century, Pratika also became the joint fastest woman to reach 1,000 ODI runs in just 23 innings, equaling Australia’s Lindsay Reeler. Her innings helped India post a formidable 340/3 in 49 overs and secure a semi-final berth with a 53-run DLS victory over New Zealand.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Pratika credited the team environment for her growth. “The dressing room environment is amazing. The support from teammates and coaches allows me to express myself freely. I don’t focus on milestones I just want to win matches for the team,” she said.

Reflecting on India’s tournament journey, she added, “We’ve had different match-winners in previous games, and although we lost three matches, we played brilliantly. This win was about all of us coming together for our country.”

On her batting strategy, Pratika explained her approach: “I discuss with coaches how to progress and contribute to the team. My aim is always to do whatever helps the team the most.”

Talking about her partnership with Mandhana, she said: “We play our individual games and support each other. During batting, the conversation is mostly about calculations  how to set up a big total or break down a chase. It’s simple, effective, and mutual.”

India will face Bangladesh in their final round robin match in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, aiming to maintain their winning momentum heading into the semifinals.
