Prime Minister Modi Chairs NITI Aayog Meeting to Drive India’s Development Goals;8 chief ministers absent

27-05-2023 : As the head of NITI Aayog, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over a meeting where important topics like infrastructure development, women’s empowerment, and skill development were discussed. The meeting’s goal was to advance India towards its goal of being a developed country by 2047.

At the council meeting, which also included Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, a number of Chief Ministers from various states were present. Chief Ministers from Chhattisgarh’s Bhupesh Baghel, Andhra Pradesh’s Jagan Mohan Reddy, Jharkhand’s Hemant Soren, Arunachal Pradesh’s Pema Khandu, and Maharashtra’s Eknath Shinde were among the notable attendees.

The NITI Aayog outlined eight prominent themes that were extensively discussed during the day-long meeting. These themes encompassed areas such as Viksit Bharat@2047, emphasis on MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises), infrastructure and investments, minimizing compliances, women empowerment, health and nutrition, skill development, and Gati Shakti for area development and social infrastructure.

The meeting brought together Chief Ministers, Lieutenant Governors of all states and union territories, Union Ministers as ex-officio Members, as well as the Vice Chairman and Members of NITI Aayog. Prior to the 8th Governing Council Meeting, a Chief Secretaries Conference was held to delve into these themes and ensure comprehensive perspectives were considered. The conference involved extensive stakeholder consultations, brainstorming sessions with subject experts, academia, and practitioners.

The 8th Governing Council Meeting was held under India’s G20 Presidency, which reflected the nation’s civilizational ideals and vision for international cooperation in moulding the future through its motto of “One Earth, One Family, One Future.” In order to realise Viksit Bharat @2047 and advance collaborations towards India’s inclusive and sustainable goals over the following 25 years, the meeting’s main objectives were to deepen center-state cooperation.

Seven chief ministers, including Arvind Kejriwal of Delhi, Bhagwant Mann of Punjab, Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal, K Chandrashekar Rao of Telangana, Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan, Nitish Kumar of Bihar, and Pinarayi Vijayan of Kerala, chose not to attend the meeting. Due to an official visit to Singapore and Japan, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was also absent.
