Prince Andrew Steps Down from Royal Duties Amid Scandals, Cites Family and National Responsibility

Duke of York steps back from royal honours following Epstein linked controversies and alleged spy connections, retaining private life at Windsor.

UK, Oct 18 : Prince Andrew announced on Friday that he will no longer use his royal titles, including the Duke of York, following discussions with King Charles and consultations with senior family members. The decision comes amid growing scrutiny over his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and alleged links to a suspected Chinese spy.

“In discussion with The King and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded that the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,” Andrew said in a statement issued by Buckingham Palace. “I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to step back from public life.”

The move, effective immediately, marks a further withdrawal from public duties. While Andrew will retain the title of “prince” as the son of the late Queen Elizabeth II, he will no longer use honours or participate in royal engagements, including Christmas celebrations. His former wife, Sarah, Duchess of York, will now be known simply as Sarah Ferguson, though their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will keep their royal status.

Prince Andrew’s public fall began after a 2019 BBC interview on his association with Epstein drew heavy criticism. He was also the subject of a 2015 civil lawsuit filed by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexually abusing her as a minor. Andrew has consistently denied all allegations. The case was settled out of court in 2022.

Further scrutiny emerged over his reported links to Yang Tengbo, a suspected Chinese intelligence operative. Court documents revealed close business ties between Andrew and Yang, including authorisation for her to represent him in UK meetings with Chinese investors. A UK tribunal in December 2024 banned Yang from entering the country, highlighting concerns over national security.

Despite stepping back from official duties, Andrew will continue to reside at the Royal Lodge in Windsor under a private tenancy arrangement. Buckingham Palace emphasized that the decision is intended to protect the work and reputation of the royal family while respecting Andrew’s private life.
