Priyanka Gandhi Calls Out Himanta Sarma’s ‘Shameful’ Remarks on Kharge

Congress leader demands PM’s response as political tensions rise ahead of Assam polls

Mumbai, Apr 08 ; Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on April 8 sharply criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his remarks targeting Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, terming them “utterly shameful and unacceptable.”

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she accused Sarma of using “extremely rude and derogatory language” against Kharge, calling the comments deeply offensive. She underlined that Kharge’s role goes beyond party leadership, stating that he represents the concerns of Dalits and other marginalised communities nationwide.

Priyanka Gandhi further said that insulting Kharge amounts to disrespecting millions of citizens. She also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to clarify his stand on the controversy and whether such statements are endorsed by his government.

The controversy erupted after Sarma criticised Kharge in connection with the passport issue involving Congress leader Pawan Khera and allegations concerning the Assam Chief Minister’s family. His response included strong remarks that have now triggered a political backlash.

The exchange has heightened tensions in the run up to the Assam Assembly elections, intensifying the war of words between the ruling BJP and the Congress.
