PROMOTING JUSTICE AND EQUITY THROUGH LEGAL AWARENESS

The Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, inaugurated the Legal Aid Defence Counsel System in Samba. Later, he presided over an awareness programme where he highlighted the importance and meaning of the Preamble of the Constitution of India and the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Legal Services Authority Act, 1987. As we know, the preamble of the Indian Constitution is an important document that reflects the aspirations of the people of India. It lays down the foundation upon which the rest of the Constitution is built. The words “sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic” define the nature of the Indian state and its aspirations.

Chief Justice’s message that everyone should know the law as responsible citizens is a powerful call to action that highlights the importance of legal awareness and education. By emphasizing the role of legal services authorities in providing free legal aid to the poor and needy and discussing the significance of the Constitution’s preamble, the Chief Justice has set an example of leadership and commitment to justice. As citizens, we have a responsibility to educate ourselves on the law and to use our knowledge to help others. The Chief Justice’s message serves as a reminder of this responsibility and is a valuable contribution toward building a more just and equitable society.

The government should ensure that laws are accessible to the public, written in plain language, and easily understandable. Additionally, the government should provide adequate funding for legal aid programs and make sure that they are available to all citizens, regardless of their financial situation. It is also important to recognize that laws are not static and can change over time. As society evolves, so too does the law. Therefore, legal education and awareness must be an ongoing process.
