Protest-Led Imposition of Restrictions: Yuva Rajput Sabha’s Call for Removal of Sarore Toll Plaza Sparks Movement Curbs in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba District
22-08-2023 : Restrictions on movement have been enforced in the vicinity of the Sarore toll plaza in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir. These measures were implemented in response to a protest staged by a group known as the ‘Yuva Rajput Sabha,’ which demanded the removal of the toll plaza.
The imposition of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) was carried out by Abhishek Sharma, the District Magistrate of Samba. This legal provision prohibits gatherings of four or more individuals at a specific location. The announcement of these restrictions was made late on Monday night and encompassed the area surrounding the toll plaza.
During the course of the protest that occurred on Monday, a considerable number of activists associated with the Yuva Rajput Sabha participated. Their primary demand was the elimination of the toll plaza. In an escalation of the protest, certain individuals within the group attempted to cause damage to the structure itself. Consequently, law enforcement had to employ force through lathi-charge tactics to disperse the protestors.
The key contention of the demonstrators was that the establishment of the toll plaza is in direct contravention of established regulations. This sentiment has been echoed by various other entities, including trade organizations, all of which advocate for the removal of the toll plaza. These organizations assert that the toll requirement places an undue burden on individuals needing to leave their residences for essential purposes.
As the protest unfolded, certain members of the Yuva Rajput Sabha who were engaged in a sit-in demonstration outside the toll plaza were apprehended by the police during the nighttime hours as per souces.
