Punjab on Edge: Second Kabaddi Player Murdered in a Week, Bishnoi Gang Takes Responsibility

The killing of Gurwinder Singh in Samrala highlights deepening links between Punjab’s kabaddi circuit and organised crime, as the Bishnoi gang issues chilling threats online.

Punjab, Nov 5 — Less than a week after a kabaddi player’s murder shook Ludhiana, another player, Gurwinder Singh, was gunned down in the Samrala block, with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang claiming responsibility for the killing.

According to police sources, the attack was executed by gang members Karan Madpur and Tej Chak, while Bishnoi gang operatives Hari Boxer and Arzoo Bishnoi took responsibility through a social media post. The post, allegedly made from a handle linked to Anmol Bishnoi brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi  also issued a chilling warning to rivals.

“This is a warning for whoever sides with our enemies. Either mend your ways or be ready for the next bullet to pierce your chest,” the message read.

Crime Infiltrates Kabaddi

Gurwinder Singh’s death marks the 10th murder of a kabaddi player in Punjab since 2016, exposing the sport’s growing ties with the world of crime, drug trade, and gang wars.

Once a rural pride and symbol of strength, kabaddi has increasingly attracted illicit money and foreign funding, particularly from expatriates in Canada, the UK, and Australia. Investigations suggest that proceeds from the drug trade have also been funneled into tournaments, turning the sport into a lucrative but dangerous arena.

Several players have allegedly developed connections with local politicians and gangsters, resulting in rivalries and violent feuds that often turn fatal.

Recent Murder Adds to Fear

Just last Friday, national level kabaddi player Tejpal Singh, 26, was brutally beaten and shot dead in Ludhiana. Two suspects  Gagandeep Singh and Harpreet Singh alias Honey   were later arrested. Police said the murder appeared to stem from an old personal rivalry, though no gang had claimed responsibility.

The back-to-back killings have sent shockwaves through Punjab’s sports circles, prompting renewed calls for stricter policing and investigation into the criminal infiltration of kabaddi.
