Punjab Railway Track Damage Triggers Police Probe Into Possible Explosion

Freight only line in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib found wrecked, police register case under Railways Act

Chandigarh, Jan 24: Police are investigating whether an explosion caused damage to a railway track near Sirhind in Punjab’s Fatehgarh Sahib district after a portion of the line was found wrecked late Friday night, officials said on Saturday.

According to the Government Railway Police, the damaged stretch is located near Khanpur village, around four to five kilometres from Sirhind railway station. The track is primarily used for the movement of freight trains.

Officials said a police team has inspected the site and forensic examination is part of the ongoing inquiry to determine the exact cause of the damage. While the possibility of an explosion has not been ruled out, authorities said conclusions will be drawn only after detailed investigation.

A case has been registered under Section 150 of the Railways Act, which pertains to malicious acts aimed at wrecking or attempting to wreck a train. Further investigation is underway to identify those responsible and assess any potential security concerns.
