QUEEN ELIZABETH – A SHEEN OF CREDIBILITY

Editorial . . . . .

The passing of Elizabeth II marks the end of an era for the entire world as well as the exceptionally eventful life of a Head of State. Queen Elizabeth’s reign, which spanned 70 years and 214 days from February 6, 1952, until her passing on September 8, 2022, was the second-longest in history for a head of state and the longest of any British monarch.  Although she assumed the position of head of state in the early years of the Cold War, she was also instrumental in implementing a paradigm-shifting shift in the political power structure from the British Empire to the Commonwealth, which signaled the start of the emergence of independent, post-colonial countries. The Cold War ended under her administration as well. Even more momentous for England and all of Europe was the fact that she oversaw the end of the UK’s 47-year experiment as a member of the European Union, which had started on her watch. As many as 15 Prime Ministers came and went in the UK throughout her time on the throne, with the record beginning with Winston Churchill and ending with Liz Truss, according to research on British politics and government. The biggest controversy during Queen Elizabeth’s reign involved Diana, the former wife of Prince Charles who is now King after she passed away in a car accident in Paris in 1997. The monarchy had become the focus of attention and the subject of criticism following that horrific accident and death for supposedly avoiding a public response. It’s also vital to remember that the fundamental institution of the Crown was questioned multiple times during her 70-year reign. She had received criticism from the Right for presiding over the fall of the Empire. The Crown, however, served as the ultimate representation of aristocracy and unjustified privilege for progressives in Britain and elsewhere. However, by adhering steadfastly to the highest ideals of being the constitutional head of a democratic state, Britain’s longest-serving queen surpassed the constraints of her role. The fact that Queen Elizabeth oversaw the process is essential because she ensured that the Crown not only survived the post-War turmoil but also endured despite the extraordinary changes in politics and society. It’s uncertain how much support a 73-year-old emperor will receive from the country’s citizens, who lately has demonstrated a willingness to throw out the past. It will be a significant crown to fill, to put it mildly.
