23-04-2023 : Amritpal Singh, a radical preacher and the leader of Waris Punjab De, a pro-Khalistan group, was arrested from Rode village in Moga, Punjab in the early hours of Sunday morning. He had been evading arrest since March 18 when Punjab police launched a crackdown on Khalistan sympathizers following intelligence inputs about their activities. The arrest of Amritpal Singh was confirmed by Punjab Police on Twitter, urging citizens to maintain peace and harmony and refrain from sharing fake news.
Amritpal Singh and his associates have been booked under multiple criminal cases, including spreading disharmony among different classes, attempt to murder, attacking police personnel, and obstructing public servants from performing their lawful duty. The charges against him stem from his alleged involvement in promoting separatist activities and inciting communal tensions.
Prior to his arrest, Amritpal Singh’s wife, Kirandeep Kaur, was stopped from boarding a flight to London at the Sri Guru Ram Dass International Airport in Punjab. She was interrogated by immigration authorities and asked to return along with some relatives who had come to see her off. This incident adds to the legal troubles faced by Amritpal Singh and his associates.
A video has also surfaced on social media showing Amritpal Singh addressing a gathering at a gurdwara in Rode village, where he appears to be saying that he decided to surrender. In the video, he mentions that the past month has seen “excesses” unleashed by the government against Sikhs and that he will face false cases registered against him by the police in court. He also expresses determination to fight for his cause and states that his arrest is not the end, but the beginning. He asserts that the allegations against him will be proven false in the court of Almighty.
