Radio Anlay Bridges Remote Ladakh Hamlets with Vital Updates and Entertainment

Army backed community station on 89.6 MHz becomes lifeline for six Ladakhi hamlets near the India-China border

Hanle (Ladakh), Feb 28: In the icy expanse of eastern Ladakh, a warm “Julley” greets residents each morning as Radio Anlay Ladakh beams information and entertainment across six scattered hamlets of Hanle, near the India–China border.

Operating from a modest three room building, the community radio station has emerged as a crucial communication bridge in a region where access to mainstream media remains limited. From government welfare schemes and agriculture advisories to weather alerts and music, the broadcasts keep locals connected to both essential updates and cultural expression.

Launched in November 2024 under the Indian Army’s ‘Operation Sadbhavana’, the 89.6 MHz station  carrying the tagline “Jahan Sitare Mile”  is managed by a four member local team comprising a station manager, sound engineer and two radio jockeys.

Station manager Kunzang Disket said the initiative fills a major information gap, as national radio signals are often weak in the high-altitude terrain. She noted that programming covers public welfare information, cultural preservation, and features on Hanle’s distinct attractions, including its monastery and globally recognised dark sky observation site.

The station reaches villages within a 10-kilometre radius and airs content primarily in Ladakhi and Hindi, with select English segments tailored for visiting tourists.

Radio jockey Tsering Lamo said daily transmission runs from 9 am to 6 pm, offering a mix of motivational talks, educational discussions, health awareness segments, and dedicated slots celebrating Ladakhi traditions. The day concludes with a lively music-based show blending regional tracks and Bollywood hits  a favourite among listeners.

Beyond on air programming, the station actively engages audiences through social media and a mobile application available on Android and iOS platforms. The app allows listeners to stream curated shows and share feedback, including voice messages.

In a region defined by isolation and extreme weather, Radio Anlay Ladakh stands as a vibrant symbol of connectivity  amplifying local voices while keeping a remote border community informed and entertained.
