Rae Bareli Nomination Filed by Rahul Gandhi; Mallikarjun, Sonia, and Priyanka Accompany Him, Continuing Family Legacy in UP Politics

From Wayanad to Rae Bareli: Rahul Gandhi's Political Journey and the Continuity of Gandhi Dynasty's Influence in Uttar Pradesh

Rae Bareli/New Delhi, May 3: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made a significant move in the political landscape by filing his nomination papers from Uttar Pradesh’s Rae Bareli constituency, just an hour before nominations closed for the Lok Sabha seat. This decision came after the Congress party ended the suspense over Amethi and Rae Bareli, announcing his candidature from the seat long held by his mother, Sonia Gandhi, for the past two decades.

Having previously lost in the adjoining Amethi constituency in the 2019 elections, Rahul Gandhi emerged victorious from Wayanad in Kerala, a seat he is once again contesting this time around. Accompanied by senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul filed his papers around 2 pm on the last day for filing nominations for the upcoming May 20 phase of polling. His brother-in-law Robert Vadra and former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot were also present to support him.

The journey to filing the nomination was marked by a show of solidarity as the leaders arrived at the Fursatganj airport in Amethi before heading to adjoining Rae Bareli. A multitude of Congress workers, along with supporters from other bloc partners, gathered at the district collectorate to cheer the former party president.

In addition to Rahul Gandhi’s nomination, the Congress also fielded Kishori Lal Sharma, a close aide of the Gandhi family, from the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, symbolizing the family’s longstanding connection to the region. Rae Bareli holds historical significance for the Gandhi family, having been represented by Rahul’s mother, Sonia Gandhi, his grandmother Indira Gandhi, and his grandfather Feroze Gandhi in the past.

On the opposing front, the BJP announced Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate from Rae Bareli, who had previously contested against Sonia Gandhi in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The political atmosphere was further charged with posters featuring Rahul Gandhi alongside Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, indicating potential alliances and strategies in the region.

However, Union Minister and Amethi MP Smriti Irani took a dig at the Gandhi family’s absence in the Amethi election fray, interpreting it as a sign of acceptance of defeat even before the polling on the seat. She remarked that the absence of a Gandhi family member contesting against her indicated the Congress’s acknowledgment of its weakened position in Amethi.
