Rahul Gandhi Says ‘Vote Chori’ Bigger Issue Than PM’s Manipur Visit

Congress leader downplays Prime Minister’s tour to strife-hit Manipur, insists election “vote theft” is the biggest challenge before the nation.

Junagadh, Sep 12: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur is “not a big deal,” asserting instead that “vote chori” (vote theft) is the most pressing issue before the country today.

Speaking to reporters outside Keshod airport in Gujarat’s Junagadh district, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha claimed that people across India are raising the slogan of “vote chor” (vote thief). “Manipur has been in trouble for a long time and the PM has decided to go there now. So that’s not a big deal. The main issue today in India is vote theft,” Gandhi said.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Manipur on September 13, where he will interact with internally displaced people in Churachandpur and Imphal marking his first trip to the violence-hit state since ethnic clashes erupted two years ago.

Gandhi accused the BJP of stealing elections in Haryana and Maharashtra, adding, “We proved that in Karnataka recently. Everywhere people are raising the slogan of vote chor.”

The Congress MP from Raebareli arrived in Junagadh to address district and city unit presidents as part of the party’s Sangathan Srujan Abhiyan (campaign to strengthen the organisation). The camp, which runs from September 10 to 19, was inaugurated earlier this week by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.

According to Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi, Gandhi will interact with senior party leaders for nearly three hours before returning to Delhi.
