Rahul Gandhi Slams Lateral Entry as Attack on Dalits, OBCs, and Adivasis
New Delhi, 19-08-2024: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, intensified his criticism of the lateral entry issue on Monday, describing it as a direct attack on Dalits, OBCs, and Adivasis. He accused the BJP of attempting to strip reservations from the Bahujan community. The Congress’s disapproval comes after the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) issued a notification on Saturday for the recruitment of 45 joint secretaries, directors, and deputy secretaries through lateral entry, which allows specialists, including those from the private sector, to join government departments.
Gandhi expressed his concerns on X, stating, “Lateral entry is an attack on Dalits, OBCs, and Adivasis.” He further claimed that the BJP’s interpretation of Ram Rajya aims to undermine the Constitution and deprive Bahujans of their rightful reservations. Government sources have countered this narrative, noting that the concept of lateral entry was originally introduced under the Congress-led UPA regime and strongly supported by the Second Administrative Reforms Commission in 2005.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw responded to the Congress’s criticism by labeling it as hypocritical, pointing out that the BJP-led NDA government has developed a transparent method for implementing a concept initially proposed by the UPA. Gandhi, however, remains firm in his opposition. In a post on X, he labeled the government’s move to recruit through lateral entry as an “anti-national step,” alleging that reservations for SCs, STs, and OBCs are being openly taken away by this process.
Gandhi also warned that the INDIA bloc would strongly oppose what he calls an “anti-national step” that threatens both the administrative framework and social justice. He further accused Prime Minister Modi of privatizing the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) as a means to dismantle reservations, stating, “Privatisation of the IAS is Modi’s guarantee for ending reservation.”
