Rahul Gandhi Urges Nationwide Participation in November 1 Delhi March to ‘Save Democracy’

The Congress leader calls for a broad-based mobilisation at Ramlila Maidan against alleged vote theft, urging people across political affiliations to defend the Constitution and electoral integrity.

NEW DELHI, Oct 29: Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday appealed to citizens, student groups and people from different political backgrounds to participate in the November 1 ‘Chalo Delhi’ march at Ramlila Maidan, calling it a collective effort to protect democracy and the Constitution.

In a video message shared on X, Gandhi said the proposed demonstration was not limited to any single political party but represented a broader movement to safeguard democratic institutions, constitutional values and freedom of expression.

Describing the rally as a march to defend the country’s democratic foundations, he urged people concerned about electoral transparency and the functioning of constitutional institutions to join the mobilisation.

Gandhi alleged that India’s democratic system was facing challenges and reiterated the Congress’s charge of “vote theft”. He called on citizens to rise above political differences and participate in what he described as a national effort to protect democratic rights.

“There is only one protest — it is the protest of the country,” he said, seeking to present the proposed demonstration as a collective expression of public concern rather than a partisan gathering.

The Congress leader also sought to reassure prospective participants against fears of police action, urging them not to be discouraged by the possibility of a confrontation with the authorities.

Special Appeal to Student Organisations

Gandhi made a particular appeal to students and student organisations across the political spectrum, asking them to join the march if they believed their freedom to express opinions and ideas was under threat.

He urged young people to set aside political affiliations and participate in the demonstration in defence of their democratic freedoms.

Calling for collective action, Gandhi said people should walk together to protect the Constitution and the nation. His message sought to broaden the participation beyond Congress workers and supporters to include students, civil society groups and other citizens.

The appeal comes as the Congress attempts to build wider public support for its campaign on electoral integrity and the role of constitutional institutions.

Congress Intensifies ‘Vote Theft’ Campaign

The Congress has made allegations of “vote theft” a central issue in its political confrontation with the BJP-led government. The party has repeatedly raised concerns over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, arguing that the exercise could result in eligible voters being excluded from electoral lists.

The party and other Opposition groups have called for safeguards to ensure that legitimate voters are not deprived of their right to participate in elections. They have also questioned the transparency and fairness of the revision process.

The BJP and the Election Commission have rejected or disputed the Opposition’s allegations.

The controversy has contributed to tensions between the ruling party and the Opposition over the management of electoral rolls, the independence of election authorities and the protection of voting rights.

November 1 March to Be Held at Ramlila Maidan

The Congress has announced that the ‘Chalo Delhi’ march will take place at Ramlila Maidan on November 1. The demonstration is intended to highlight the party’s concerns over electoral malpractice and rally support for the protection of democratic institutions.

Gandhi’s latest appeal reflects an effort to attract participation from people who may not necessarily support the Congress but share concerns about electoral transparency and constitutional freedoms.

By reaching out to students and citizens across political affiliations, the Congress is seeking to frame the proposed gathering as a broader democratic mobilisation.

The march is expected to provide the party with an opportunity to reinforce its campaign against alleged electoral irregularities and press its demand for greater accountability in the electoral process.

Gandhi urged people to participate in large numbers, describing the demonstration as a collective effort to defend the Constitution and the democratic principles on which the country’s political system rests.
