Rahul Gandhi urges swift relief measures as Kolkata reels under floods, calls on Congress workers and governments to assist victims
Kolkata, Sep 25: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the havoc caused by incessant rainfall and widespread flooding in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal.
Sharing a message on X, Gandhi extended his condolences to families who lost their loved ones in the disaster. “My thoughts are with the people of Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal as they endure the devastation caused by incessant rainfall and flooding. Heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. I urge Congress workers to extend all possible support, and request State & Central Governments to act swiftly to help restore normalcy,” he said.
The city’s infrastructure was severely affected, with waterlogging on railway tracks near Sealdah disrupting train services on the main Bangaon and Hasnabad lines. At least 10 people lost their lives due to electrocution, while several others sustained injuries. Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim urged residents to stay indoors amid the ongoing hazards.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the downpour as “unprecedented” and criticized the private power utility, Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC), for lapses in maintaining the power grid. She directed CESC to provide assistance and employment support to the families of the victims.
The state government announced compensation for the bereaved families and promised relief measures for those affected. Rahul Gandhi emphasized the role of Congress workers in extending immediate aid, rehabilitation, and support to flood-impacted communities.
