Railways Enable 60-Tonne Vermicompost Transport to Anantnag in South Kashmir

Northern Railway’s Jammu Division boosts agri-supply chains with landmark freight movement to Anantnag

Jammu, Apr 19: In a significant development for freight operations and agricultural logistics, the Jammu Division of Northern Railway has successfully facilitated the first ever vermicompost fertiliser consignment to south Kashmir’s Anantnag from Ambala, officials confirmed.

The shipment marks an important milestone in the division’s ongoing efforts to enhance freight traffic while supporting agricultural supply chains in the region. The consignment was coordinated by the Business Development Unit (BDU) and transported through piecemeal traffic, a method designed to cater to small and medium scale traders.

According to Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal, the shipment consisted of approximately 1,200 bags of vermicompost, collectively weighing around 60 tonnes. The fertiliser was dispatched by Sikri Farms based in Ambala and reached its destination smoothly, reflecting improved logistical efficiency.

Officials highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader strategy by Indian Railways to diversify freight services and make transportation more accessible to smaller businesses. The use of piecemeal traffic allows traders to send smaller consignments without requiring full wagon loads, thereby reducing costs and increasing participation in rail-based logistics.

“This achievement not only strengthens commercial linkages between regions but also reinforces the critical role of railways in ensuring the steady availability of essential agricultural inputs in Kashmir,” Singhal stated.

The arrival of organic fertiliser like vermicompost is expected to support local farming practices in south Kashmir, where there is a growing shift toward sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture. By ensuring timely delivery of such inputs, the railways are contributing to improved crop productivity and soil health in the region.

Railway authorities believe that this successful operation will encourage more businesses to utilize rail transport for agricultural and allied products. It also sets the stage for future collaborations aimed at boosting trade connectivity between northern states and the Kashmir Valley.

The development is being viewed as a positive step toward sustainable economic growth, strengthening both logistics infrastructure and agricultural resilience in Jammu and Kashmir.
