Rajasthan Suspends 33 Kashmiri Students After Protest J&K Authorities Seek Omar Abdullah’s Intervention
33 Kashmiri Students Suspended at Rajasthan University Over Nursing Course Protest; J&K Body Appeals to Omar Abdullah
Srinagar, Feb 12: Thirty-three students from Jammu and Kashmir have been suspended from Mewar University in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, after staging a peaceful protest against the institution’s failure to secure mandatory approvals for its B.Sc Nursing programme, the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) said on Thursday.
The association highlighted that the course lacks recognition from both the Rajasthan Nursing Council and the Indian Nursing Council, putting over 50 enrolled Kashmiri students’ degrees, professional registration, and future employment at risk.
“The university repeatedly assured students that approvals would be obtained. Last year, the Registrar provided a written commitment, but no progress has been made,” said Nasir Khuehami, National Convenor of the JKSA.
Instead of addressing the concerns, the university administration allegedly resorted to punitive measures. “Suspending students for a peaceful protest is aimed at silencing dissent. Running a professional course without statutory approvals is a serious regulatory failure,” Khuehami added.
The association has urged Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and take up the matter with the Rajasthan government. It has also appealed to Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to ensure that either the necessary approvals are secured or students are transferred to a recognized institution without losing academic progress.
