Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh,17-01-2025: In a historic event at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, Rakesh Kumar Koul has been nominated as a member of the Gow Sansad (Cow Parliament) for the Anantnag-Rajouri Parliamentary Constituency by Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda Saraswati Ji Maharaj. This initiative is part of a nationwide effort to safeguard the welfare of cows and propose their designation as the National Animal of India.
The Gow Sansad has been formed to address the alarming rise in cow slaughter and to advocate for measures ensuring the protection of cows across the country. Representatives from all 543 parliamentary constituencies have taken an oath during the Maha Kumbh to work collectively for the welfare and protection of cows.
Speaking at the event, Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwarananda emphasized the sacredness of cows in Indian culture and their importance in promoting sustainable agriculture and rural livelihoods. He expressed hope that this initiative would gain momentum at both the parliamentary and state assembly levels.
Rakesh Kumar Koul, a former Sarpanch, social activist, and awardee of the Best Human Rights Award (2023), expressed his gratitude for the nomination and pledged to work tirelessly for this noble cause. “The cow is a symbol of our culture, tradition, and economy. As a representative of the Gow Sansad, I will advocate for its welfare and push for its recognition as the National Animal,” he stated.
The formation of the Gow Sansad at the Maha Kumbh signifies a unified effort by spiritual leaders, policymakers, and citizens to uphold the sanctity of the cow and ensure its protection through legislative and grassroots efforts.
This initiative is expected to inspire similar movements at the state assembly level, strengthening the resolve to protect India’s cultural heritage and natural resources.
