Ramesh Sippy Expresses Interest in Producing Joint Venture Film in Kolkata

At the 31st Kolkata International Film Festival, the veteran filmmaker expressed his desire to make a film in Bengal that bridges the cinematic worlds of Mumbai and Kolkata.

KOLKATA, Nov 8: Veteran Bollywood filmmaker Ramesh Sippy has expressed his desire to make a movie in Kolkata through a joint venture between the Mumbai and Bengal film industries, provided he finds a story that resonates with both audiences.

Speaking at the Satyajit Ray Memorial Lecture, an annual highlight of the Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF), Sippy said, “I mentioned this yesterday as well. I requested Mamataji too. I would be quite happy to work on a project jointly between Bombay and Bengal if we find the right subject that appeals to both audiences. If it comes through, it would be great.”

The celebrated director of Sholay lauded Bengali cinema, saying, “Some of the finest films are made here, just as they are in Mumbai or the South. The artistry and storytelling from Bengal have always stood out.”

Reflecting on his iconic 1975 film Sholay, which celebrates 50 years of release next year, Sippy shared behind-the-scenes moments that highlighted India’s unity in diversity. He recalled the moving sequence featuring AK Hangal as the village Imam and Sachin as his son, saying, “The dialogue  Ek baap ke kandhe par bete ka janazaa  speaks miles. It reflects what we wanted to convey about humanity and shared emotions.”

Sippy’s remarks were met with enthusiasm at KIFF, where he emphasized the potential of Kolkata as a cinematic hub rich in culture, storytelling, and talent.
