Ranji Trophy 2026 Final: Karnataka Enter Decisive Clash as Favorites Against Resilient J&K

Ranji Trophy 2026 Final Preview: Karnataka Poised to Assert Dominance Against Gritty J&K

J&K, Feb 23 : Jammu and Kashmir’s maiden Ranji Trophy final appearance is a story of determination and passion, but the underdog side faces a monumental task to topple eight-time champions Karnataka over the next five days, starting Monday. Karnataka enters the clash as clear favourites, not just because of their storied legacy, but due to a consistent season marked by resilience, adaptability, and stellar performances despite injuries and tough conditions.

Karnataka’s Season of Dominance

After a narrow first innings deficit against Saurashtra in Rajkot, Karnataka quickly found form, comfortably overcoming challengers like Mumbai and new entrants Uttarakhand. The backbone of their success has been their prolific batting lineup. KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Devdutt Padikkal, and Ravichandran Smaran have consistently delivered:

KL Rahul: 457 runs in 3 matches, average 91.40

Karun Nair: 699 runs in 8 matches, average 63.54

Devdutt Padikkal: 532 runs in 5 matches, average 66.50

Ravichandran Smaran: 950 runs in 8 matches

These performances have helped Karnataka maintain momentum despite Mayank Agarwal stepping down as captain, with Devdutt Padikkal taking over leadership duties effectively.

J&K’s Bowling Edge

Jammu and Kashmir will rely on pacer Auqib Nabi, who has claimed 55 wickets this season, to challenge Karnataka’s strong batting unit. The KSCA Stadium pitch is expected to assist pacers early on, giving J&K a potential opening. However, Karnataka’s bowling attack, led by India pacer Prasidh Krishna and supported by Vidwath Kaverappa, Vidyadhar Patil, Vysakh Vijaykumar, Shikhar Shetty, and Mohsin Khan, remains formidable.

Shreyas Gopal: Karnataka’s X-Factor

All-rounder Shreyas Gopal has been central to Karnataka’s success, taking 46 wickets and scoring 442 runs at an average of 45. His ability to perform under pressure has often rescued the team, and he is expected to play a decisive role in the final. Former Karnataka captain R Vinay Kumar highlighted his impact: “Shreyas has supported frontline batsmen and bowlers, making Karnataka stronger in all conditions.”

Big-Match Temperament

Karnataka also boasts players with previous Ranji Trophy final experience. Rahul, Karun, Shreyas, and Mayank were part of the squad that achieved Ranji doubles in 2013-14 and 2014-15, providing guidance and stability to the younger players.

Meanwhile, J&K will lean on Paras Dogra, the 41-year-old captain, and head coach Ajay Sharma to steady the team. Having overcome strong opponents like Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, J&K’s challenge lies in maintaining composure and maximizing the chances of a historic upset against a seasoned Karnataka side aiming for their ninth Ranji title.
