Rashid Khan Declines Reported Indian Citizenship Offer, Reaffirms Loyalty to Afghanistan

Mumbai, Apr 20 : In a revealing account from his upcoming biography, Afghan cricket sensation Rashid Khan has disclosed that he turned down offers of citizenship and international representation from both India and Australia, choosing instead to remain loyal to his home nation, Afghanistan.

The revelations come from the book Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom, authored by Mohammad Haand Jafar, which is scheduled for release on Monday. In the book, Rashid shares personal insights into his journey and the difficult decisions he faced as his cricketing career gained global recognition.

According to excerpts reported by Press Trust of India, Rashid was approached by officials from both countries with proposals that included citizenship and the opportunity to play international cricket under their flags. However, the 27-year-old spinner made his stance clear.

“I received such offers from both Australia and India. But I told them, ‘If I don’t play for my country, I won’t play for any other country either,’” Rashid is quoted as saying in the book.

Indian Offer During IPL Season

Rashid elaborated more on the approach from India, which reportedly took place during the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League. At the time, he was playing for the Gujarat Titans, one of the league’s prominent franchises.

He recounted that a team official informed him that a senior figure from the Board of Control for Cricket in India wanted to meet him. During the interaction, Rashid said he was offered the possibility of settling in India with official documentation and continuing his cricket career there.

“The situation in your country is very bad. Come stay in India. We will give you Indian documents, live here, play cricket here,” the official reportedly told him.

Despite the unexpected nature of the proposal, Rashid responded with gratitude but firmly declined, reiterating his commitment to Afghanistan.

A Pattern of Loyalty

This is not the first time Rashid’s loyalty to Afghanistan has been highlighted. The book also revisits a memorable performance during the 2018 IPL when he played for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Kolkata Knight Riders. In that match, he delivered an outstanding all round display, scoring a quickfire 34 runs off just 10 balls and taking three crucial wickets.

His performance sparked a wave of admiration on social media in India, with some fans even urging the government to grant him citizenship. The issue gained enough traction that then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj publicly responded, clarifying that citizenship matters fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The discussion also reached Afghanistan’s leadership at the time, with former President Ashraf Ghani expressing strong sentiments about retaining national talent. He emphasized that Rashid was a source of pride for the country and should not represent any other nation.

Rashid later acknowledged Ghani’s remarks and reaffirmed his dedication to Afghanistan’s cricketing future.
