Real Madrid beat Inter as Mbappe and Valverde strike in Champions League

Madrid overcame a spirited Inter side 2-1 in an entertaining European opener, while Manchester City also began its campaign with a convincing victory.

Mumbai, Sep 09 : Real Madrid opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan on Tuesday, with Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde finding the net in a closely contested encounter.

Mbappe put Madrid ahead in the 14th minute after Inter lost possession under pressure. The French forward capitalised on the opportunity to give the Spanish side an early advantage.

Inter continued to threaten despite falling behind, but Madrid extended their lead before the interval. Valverde finished from close range after the hosts capitalised on another defensive error.

Carlos Augusto pulled one back for Inter, setting up a tense finish. The Italian side pushed for an equaliser but Madrid held on to secure three points.

Elsewhere, Manchester City began their European campaign with a 2-0 win away to Porto. Erling Haaland scored both goals, taking his Champions League tally to 59 goals in 59 appearances.

Borussia Dortmund also claimed a 3-2 victory over Villarreal in another high-scoring contest, while Aston Villa defeated Club Brugge 3-2.
