Reliance Sparks Cola Battle with Coke, Pepsi Amid Massive Fridge Push in India

Aggressive expansion by Reliance, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo is driving rapid growth in India’s visi cooler market as beverage giants race to dominate kirana stores and small-town retail networks.

India, May 12 : India’s intensifying soft drink rivalry between Reliance Consumer Products, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo is creating an unexpected surge in demand for commercial refrigeration equipment across the country. As beverage companies fight for shelf visibility and retail dominance, manufacturers of visi coolers and commercial refrigerators are witnessing a sharp rise in business opportunities.
The competition escalated after billionaire Mukesh Ambani backed Campa Cola re-entered the carbonated beverage market with aggressive pricing and rapid distribution expansion. Reliance’s low-cost strategy has challenged the long-standing dominance of American beverage giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, especially in India’s price sensitive markets.
To strengthen retail presence, beverage firms are increasingly installing glass door cooling units at neighborhood grocery stores, roadside eateries and small retail outlets. These refrigeration systems help brands secure prime display space while ensuring cold beverages remain easily accessible to customers during India’s scorching summer months.
Industry executives say the cooling equipment segment is receiving a strong push from the ongoing market battle. Blue Star Ltd., one of India’s leading cooling appliance manufacturers, said demand for commercial refrigeration units is growing at a pace faster than the company’s overall business expansion.
The commercial refrigeration market in India is projected to witness significant long-term growth. Industry estimates suggest the sector could rise from nearly $2.8 billion in 2025 to around $3.9 billion by 2034, supported by increasing beverage consumption and wider retail penetration in smaller cities and rural regions.
Executives from PepsiCo bottler Varun Beverages Ltd. recently highlighted the scale of the expansion underway. The company indicated that hundreds of thousands of chilling units are being added collectively by major beverage players, while retailers themselves are also investing heavily in additional cooling systems to meet rising consumer demand.
Analysts say refrigeration infrastructure has become a critical competitive tool in India’s beverage market. Unlike developed economies dominated by supermarkets, India still relies heavily on kirana stores and compact food outlets that often lack adequate refrigeration capacity. As a result, beverage companies frequently provide cooling units directly to retailers as part of their distribution strategy.
Retail experts believe visibility inside these stores plays a major role in influencing consumer purchases. A branded cooler not only stores products but also acts as a powerful advertising platform in crowded retail environments where space is limited.
Reliance’s Campa Cola has rapidly expanded its footprint in several regional markets. According to recent investor disclosures, the brand has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing soft drink labels with strong market share gains in multiple territories. The expansion has intensified competition for retail space and consumer attention.
At the same time, refrigerator manufacturers such as Blue Star, Voltas, Haier Appliances India and Western Refrigeration are benefiting from increased orders from beverage companies and independent retailers alike. Several firms are also expanding production capacity to cater to rising domestic demand.
Despite the growth momentum, industry observers caution that geopolitical uncertainties and supply chain disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia could impact component availability and logistics costs in the coming months. However, forecasts of a hotter than normal summer across India are expected to keep beverage demand elevated, supporting continued investment in cooling infrastructure.
Market analysts believe the current refrigeration boom reflects deeper changes in India’s fast-moving consumer goods sector, where distribution reach and in-store visibility are becoming increasingly important in determining market leadership.
